Spondylodiscitis to Recovery in India

Patient History

Mr. Amanuel from Eritra presented with mid-back pain radiating anteriorly to the abdominal region. He was initially undergoing evaluation for abdominal pain under the care of our Gastroenterology team at Artemis. Due to the atypical nature and persistence of his symptoms, he was referred to Dr. Hitesh Garg for assessment of potential spinal causes.

Clinical examination and Radiological investigations

Following a comprehensive clinical examination and radiological investigations, the patient was diagnosed with spondylodiscitis at the D11-D12 level. Spondylodiscitis is an infectious condition involving the intervertebral disc space and adjacent vertebrae. It often results in bony destruction and disc degeneration, which can lead to spinal instability and nerve root compression, thereby contributing to significant pain and functional impairment.

Minimally Invasive Spinal Fixation Surgery

To address the issue effectively, Dr. Garg planned a minimally invasive spinal fixation surgery from D10 to L1, ensuring both stability and reduced recovery time. During the procedure, a biopsy was also taken to identify the underlying cause of the infection for targeted treatment. The biopsy came as positive for tuberculosis. Mr Amanuel was started on appropriate antituberculosis treatment for the same

Recovery after spinal fixation surgery

Post-surgery, Mr. Amanuel showed excellent recovery. With proper medical care, physical rehabilitation, and a supportive clinical environment, he regained his mobility and was pain-free. After a 20-day stay in India, he returned to his home country, happy, healing and hopeful for a healthy future.
