From unbearable leg pain to walking pain-free again

Patient Medical History

A 48-year-old male from Gujarat presented with severe, sudden-onset radiating pain in the right leg (sciatica) that had developed 10 days earlier. He also had progressive weakness in the right lower limb, significantly limiting his ability to walk and perform routine activities. Despite initial care, there was no improvement in strength, prompting him to seek advanced spine treatment.

Initial Consultation with Dr Hitesh

At Artemis Hospital, he was evaluated by Dr. Hitesh Garg, Head of Orthopaedic Spine Surgery. A detailed clinical examination and imaging studies revealed a prolapsed intervertebral disc at L5–S1, causing right-sided foraminal stenosis, nerve root compression, and radiculopathy.

Given the acute neurological deficit and severity of symptoms, the patient was advised Minimally Invasive Transforaminal Lumbar Interbody Fusion (MIS-TLIF) at L5–S1. This advanced spine surgery technique enables effective nerve decompression and spinal stabilisation with minimal tissue disruption, reduced blood loss, and faster recovery.

Post Surgery

The surgery was performed successfully, achieving optimal decompression of the affected nerve root and stabilisation of the spinal segment. Postoperatively, the patient experienced significant relief from radiating leg pain and gradual improvement in motor strength. With structured rehabilitation and expert post-operative care, his recovery progressed smoothly.

After a 10-day stay in Delhi, the patient returned to Gujarat in stable condition and with improved mobility, reduced pain, and renewed confidence in his daily life.

This case highlights the effectiveness of minimally invasive spine surgery in India for treating complex lumbar disc herniation with nerve compression, reinforcing Artemis Hospital as a trusted centre for advanced spine care.
